For Phoenix criminal defense clients · Arraignment

What this first date means in the district-court matters our office handles.

Video transcript

Hi, I’m Dante Wright. If your notice says ‘arraignment,’ you may wonder: Is this the trial, and do I need to be there? At the initial district-court appearances our office handles, the court focuses on your right to counsel. We do not expect a plea to be taken at that first date, and it is not your trial. After you retain Phoenix, our office sends the court a letter confirming representation and giving dates when we are available for a future hearing. Our attorneys do not ordinarily appear at that initial date. But our letter does not automatically excuse your appearance. Our office will check the court’s directions and tell you whether you must attend. Until you receive specific instructions, follow your court notice. A later arraignment in circuit court can work differently. If your date is approaching and you are unsure, call us right away.
